a16z Crypto picks Seoul for first Asia office amid Web3 boom

Venture capital firm a16z crypto has announced the launch of its first office in Asia, selecting Seoul as its regional base.

The move marks a significant expansion for the firm, which has been steadily increasing its global presence amid rising crypto adoption and developer activity across key Asian markets.

The company has appointed Sungmo Park, former Head of Asia-Pacific at the Monad Foundation, to lead its regional operations. Park brings extensive experience in blockchain ecosystem development and founder support, positioning him to guide a16z crypto’s strategic initiatives across Korea, Japan, Singapore, and other rapidly growing markets in the region.

According to a16z crypto, the new Seoul office will work closely with founders to accelerate partnerships, expand distribution channels, and deepen engagement with on-chain communities.

The firm highlighted that Asia, particularly Korea and Singapore, boasts some of the world’s highest rates of crypto ownership, while Japan has recently seen a notable surge in blockchain activity and regulatory clarity. These trends collectively create fertile ground for the next wave of Web3 adoption and innovation.

Seoul’s selection as the firm’s first Asian hub reflects South Korea’s strong developer landscape and deeply engaged on-chain community. The country has emerged as a center for blockchain gaming, infrastructure projects, and consumer-facing decentralized applications, helping attract global investment and talent.

Industry analysts note that Korea’s vibrant Web3 culture likely played an influential role in a16z crypto’s decision to anchor its Asia presence in the city rather than in competing hubs such as Singapore or Hong Kong.

The Seoul office will also serve as a bridge between global founders and Asia’s rapidly evolving crypto markets, offering on-the-ground support for community building, market entry, and product localization.

a16z crypto said the expansion underscores its long-term commitment to supporting Web3 innovation worldwide and fostering stronger collaboration between U.S.-based teams and Asia’s growing blockchain ecosystem.

The new regional office is expected to begin operations immediately, with additional hiring and program announcements planned for the coming months.
