Bhutan commits 10,000 Bitcoin to Gelephu Mindfulness City

Bhutan commits 10,000 Bitcoin to Gelephu Mindfulness City

Bhutan has unveiled a national Bitcoin Development Pledge, committing a substantial portion of its sovereign Bitcoin holdings to support long-term economic growth, job creation, and national resilience.

At the heart of the pledge is an allocation of up to 10,000 Bitcoin, valued at roughly $1 billion, to support the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a planned economic hub in southern Bhutan focused on sustainability, mindfulness, and innovation.

The initiative positions digital assets as a strategic national resource rather than a short-term financial instrument.

The pledge aligns with the vision of Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who has consistently emphasized careful, responsible adoption of modern technologies in service of Bhutan’s people and future generations.

In his National Day address, the King said the Bitcoin allocation is intended to ensure that all Bhutanese are stakeholders and beneficiaries of GMC’s success.

Bhutan said the multi-year commitment will be implemented through a range of prudent approaches still under evaluation. Options include collateralizing a portion of its Bitcoin reserves, deploying risk-managed treasury and yield strategies, or maintaining long-term holdings designed to preserve value over time.

Officials stressed that any use of Bitcoin will be guided by strong governance, transparency, and capital preservation.

The country is among the earliest sovereign adopters of Bitcoin mining, leveraging surplus renewable hydropower to generate digital assets without additional environmental impact. Bhutan plans to continue using excess clean energy from its national power utility for responsible Bitcoin mining, converting unused capacity into a long-term national asset.

The pledge also reinforces Bhutan’s engagement with responsible international fintech and digital asset partners involved in developing Gelephu Mindfulness City.

As a Special Administrative Region, GMC aims to offer regulatory clarity, modern financial connectivity, and a values-led environment for collaboration and investment.

Beyond Bitcoin reserves, Bhutan has already integrated blockchain into national infrastructure. Nearly 800,000 citizens use a blockchain-based digital identity system, while GMC has incorporated digital assets into its strategic reserves, enabled crypto payments for merchants and tourism, and launched TER, a sovereign-backed digital token linked to gold.

Together, these initiatives underscore Bhutan’s deliberate, long-term approach to digital innovation grounded in sustainability, governance, and real-world utility.
